Frequently asked questions

Waypoints and navigation

Which formats can I use to enter coordinates?+

Scirocco recognizes 5 formats: decimal degrees (40.856194), degrees and minutes (40° 51.371' N), degrees minutes seconds with symbols (40° 51' 22.3" N), DMS without symbols (40 51 22.3 N) and degrees/thousandth minutes. You can also paste coordinates copied from WhatsApp, iMessage or any other app.

How do I import waypoints from another app?+

Go to the Waypoints list, tap + and choose "Import GPX file". You can also scan a photo with coordinates written on it: Scirocco recognizes them automatically.

How do favorites work?+

Long-press a waypoint and choose "Add to favorites". Favorites are always shown at the top of the list, regardless of the chosen sorting. You can also filter to see favorites only.

What do the vibrations mean while navigating?+

Scirocco alerts you with haptic feedback as you approach your destination: a light vibration at 200 meters, medium at 100 meters and strong at 50 meters. That way you know you're arriving without looking at the screen.

What does the compass show when I have no active waypoint?+

If you enabled "Wind names while navigating" in Settings, the compass shows the name of the wind matching the direction you're heading (Tramontana, Grecale, Levante, Scirocco, Ostro, Libeccio, Ponente, Maestrale).

Can I sort waypoints in different ways?+

Yes. Tap the sort icon at the top right of the waypoint list. You can sort by date (newest or oldest), by name (A-Z or Z-A) and by distance from your current position.

GPS tracks

How do I record a track?+

Go to Settings and enable "Record GPS tracks". Scirocco records your route in the background, even with the screen off. The track stops automatically when you turn recording off.

Can I change the recording frequency?+

Yes. In Settings you'll find a slider for the tracking interval, from 1 to 30 seconds. Short intervals (1-5s) give more precise tracks but use more battery. For long crossings, 15-30 seconds are enough.

The app closed and I lost my track. Can it be recovered?+

Scirocco automatically recovers unfinished tracks on restart. If the app closes unexpectedly, the track will still appear in the list with all the points recorded up to that moment.

Which statistics do I see for a track?+

For each track: total distance, duration, average speed, top speed and number of recorded GPS points. The track is also displayed as a route on the map.

Boat management

Can I register more than one boat?+

Yes. You can add as many boats as you want. Set one as "primary": it will be the one used for fuel and range calculations while navigating.

What information can I save for each boat?+

Name, builder, model, type (RIB, sail, motor, catamaran), length, registration number, port of registry, flag and photos. Each boat can have multiple engines, documents, insurance policies and a mooring.

How does engine management work?+

For each engine you record make, model, power, serial number, type (outboard, inboard, sterndrive), fuel (petrol or diesel), tank capacity, cruising consumption and cruising speed. You can enable/disable engines and Scirocco tracks running hours.

What kinds of documents can I upload?+

For the boat: navigation license, safety certificate, title deed, liability insurance and others. For the engines: power declaration, type-approval certificate, manual and others. Each document can be a PDF or a photo.

How does insurance work?+

For each policy you record company, number, amount, phone, start and expiry dates, and notes. You can attach multiple files (photos and PDFs of the policy). Scirocco sends you a notification before expiry. You can have insurance both at boat level and for individual engines.

What is the mooring section?+

You can record your berth with the marina name, berth number, details and contract expiry date. Inside the mooring you keep a log of services performed, with date, notes and engine hours at the time of service.

Maintenance

How do I log a maintenance job?+

In the boat profile tap "Maintenance" then +. Choose whether the job is on the boat or the engine, select one or more jobs from the preset list (or add custom ones), then fill in date, engine hours and notes.

Can I schedule future maintenance?+

Yes. When creating a job, enable "Scheduled" and set the planned date. Scirocco will send you a notification as the deadline approaches. If the job becomes overdue, it is highlighted in red.

Which preset jobs are available?+

For the engine: oil change, oil filter, fuel filter, anodes, spark plugs, impeller, timing belt, fluid check, cooling flush and more. For the boat: antifouling, polishing, bilge cleaning, light check, battery check, life jacket service and more.

Are engine hours updated automatically?+

Yes. When you log a maintenance job and enter the engine hours at the time of service, if the value is higher than the engine's current one, Scirocco updates it automatically.

Fuel and range

How does the consumption calculation work?+

Scirocco uses the hourly consumption (L/h) and cruising speed of the active engine to calculate how many liters you need to reach your destination. If you're traveling at a different speed than cruising, it uses your actual speed for a more accurate estimate.

How do I set the fuel price?+

Go to Settings → Fuel price. You can enter the price per liter separately for petrol and diesel. The price is used to calculate the estimated cost of each trip.

What is the range alarm?+

While navigating, Scirocco compares the available fuel with what's needed to reach your destination. If the estimated consumption exceeds 70% of the available fuel, it shows a warning. Above 100%, the warning becomes critical.

Where do I set tank capacity and fuel level?+

In the engine profile you'll find fields for tank capacity (liters) and current level. Update them before each trip for accurate estimates.

Backup, sync and subscription

How do I back up a boat?+

In the boat list, swipe on the boat and choose "Export". Scirocco creates a .scirocco file containing everything: boat profile, engines, documents, insurance, maintenance and mooring. You can save it to Files, send it via AirDrop or share it.

How do I import a .scirocco backup?+

In the boat list, tap "Import .scirocco file". Scirocco recreates the boat with all its data. If a boat with the same name and registration already exists, it warns you.

How do I sync data across multiple devices?+

Go to Settings → iCloud Sync and turn it on. Waypoints, tracks and boats are synced automatically across all devices signed in to the same Apple ID. Requires Scirocco Pro.

What does Scirocco Pro include?+

Unlimited waypoints (the free version has a limit of 20), iCloud sync, fuel consumption calculation and all future features. Boat management, maintenance, documents and insurance are included in the free version.

How do I cancel my subscription?+

Go to iPhone Settings → tap your name → Subscriptions → Scirocco Pro → Cancel subscription. The cancellation takes effect at the end of the period you've already paid for. You can also restore a previous purchase from the app.
